Living in Oaxaca City - September 2017

After our adventures in Mexico City, it was on to Oaxaca, Oaxaca!  The city with the same name as the state it resides in, Oaxaca City is another colonial town.  Similar to San Miguel, but bigger and more crowded.  We rented a 3 bedroom apartment for a month near a nice park, about 25 minutes walk from the zocalo (town square).  We were on the second floor of a three story house, and the boys loved playing with the owner's two dogs, who lived below us.

All of the kids enjoyed swinging on the hammock on our back porch.  Ian especially liked doing his school work on the hammock.  :)

We were lucky enough to live about a five minute walk from a new, beautiful playground - complete with a merry-go-round and train!  Both operated during the evening and were free!  The playground equipment was fun, too, and a good way to get our energy out.

We also lived about a ten minute walk from El Llano park, a large green space with fountains, a weekly market, and several activities.  One night we happened upon a Luche Libre event.

We often saw street performers at the park.

Alec loved renting these motorized kids' cars and zooming around the fountains at the park!

We all loved the delicious street food at the Friday market, especially these fish tacos.  So yummy!

Oaxaca City is full of culture, beautiful streets, and colorful buildings. We loved being able to walk all around the city, as we did in San Miguel.  This yellow building was one of my favorites.

Independence Day is celebrated on September 16.  Several streets were strung with lights and the big cathedral was all lit up.  Fireworks went off around 11 pm, but we skipped out and went home.

Protesters at the zocalo have set up tents and have been residing there for years.  Yes, years!  Lots of protests happen in Oaxaca, for various reasons and by different groups.

One of many mariachi bands that we've seen in Mexico.  Usually we just see them walking in the streets, but we were fortunate to hear a group perform one evening!

Horseback Riding in San Cristobal

We had a fun family day at a nearby ranch, Grutas de Rancho Nuevo, riding horses and spelunking. The kids decided that horseback riding is ...
