At the beginning of September, we headed to see the ruins of Teotihuacan, an ancient city outside of Mexico City. For this post, I've had Ian write a paper to describe our visit.
Teotihuacan is a great place to visit! It has the third tallest pyramid in the world, and you can climb to the top! In fact, it has three pyramids and several other structures you can explore. My family went to this neat city with a tour guide and learned lots of information.
Teotihuacan is an ancient city located in Mexico. It is 25 miles or 40 kilometers northeast of Mexico City. The city was established in 100 B.C. The Teotihuacans lived there for almost 1000 years! Later, Aztecs saw the ruins and claimed a common ancestry with Teotihuacans.
The city was organized into neighborhoods. Each neighborhood had a cistern to collect water, a central plaza, and one toilet. The houses were one room for 5-6 people. Rich people lived closer to the pyramids while the poor people lived farther away. They were highly advanced and had a drainage system. The main central plaza was used for sports, festivals, and human sacrifices. Only military leaders could go up the pyramids to see if there was any danger.
When I first saw the pyramids from our hotel, I thought they looked like dirt mounds. Then, when we got closer it looked like a pyramid. The Sun Pyramid is the tallest, and was very hard to climb, but I was still the first in my family to the top. At the bottom, people were selling jaguar noise makers because the city used to be surrounded by a jungle. The tour guide clapped and his clap echoed off the pyramids to make a bird sound.
To conclude, I recommend you visit Teotihuacan as soon as possible. Teotihuacan is a cool city with lots of neat structures. My favorite thing was climbing the Pyramid of the Sun. I hope you enjoy Teotihuacan if you visit!
